Cross Fold

This CAD model was designed by Oskar van Deventer, copyright (c), 24 March 2024.

Cross Fold is a folding puzzle, inspired by Bob Hearn's Rectangle Unfold (a.k.a. 4!-fold, pronounced "fourfold"). The challenge of the puzzle is to fold the square grid pattern around a cubic "U" shape, made of five cubies. The secret of Cross Fold is that half of the puzzle is folded inside-out using the gap in the U shape to cross over.

The colorful sample was 3D-printed with Eryone Duo Silk PLA Filament. By using hilbert curves for the top and bottom faces, both colors show up in a pretty pattern. The core is the gyroid infill pattern that is often used inside 3D-printed parts for its rigidity. By selecting zero solid top/bottom layers and zero perimeters, the infill pattern is nicely visible. The hinges have 3D-printed knobs that snap into their opposite holes, and don't come out.
