The Great Reset

This CAD model was designed by Oskar van Deventer, copyright (c), 21 August 2026

The Great Reset is a puzzle with ratchets. It is inspired by the reset function of a standard 10-EUR tally counter. However, this puzzle does not have a "+1" count function. Instead, it has TWO reset knobs, one red and one green. When one rotates the red knob forward, and all four rotors are engaged, then it will get to 2143 at some point. For the green knob, it will get to 1423. The goal is to manipulate the two reset knobs to perform the great reset to 0000. You will quickly discover that rotating the knobs only forward won't get you anywhere. However, you can also rotate the reset knobs backwards to the point where it may pick up just on or two rotors, instead of all of them. The puzzle is quite complicated. May can easily achieve one or two correct "0", but then getting more "0" may spoil the earlier ones. As the puzzle has ratchet, one cannot undo moves. So one wrong move, and you may need to restart all over again.

Note that the ratchets require a mix of hard PLA (or PETG) and soft TPU plastic. One option to to print them separately, and the assemble each ratchet by hand. If you have a multi-head 3D-printer, you can also print them as one part.
