Tower of Soma

This CAD model was designed by Oskar van Deventer, copyright (c), 23 July 2024.

Tower of Soma is yet another brilliant packing problem, designed by Volker Latussek. The object of the puzzle is to pack the seven classic Soma pieces into a cube shape inside a 3x3x4 cage. There is a V-shaped hole at the top center of the cage, through which all pieces go in. As the hole is offset by half a unit in both directions, the puzzle is very difficult. It take many rotations and multistep motions to get all pieces into their cage.

Update: YouTube fan @andrewharrison8436 wrote: "If the cage could telescope down to only 3 high then the finished solution is a cube.", see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zRR1YusSQo&lc=UgyPRdYeY7xBA9tpIvJ4AaABAg. The file "Tower of Soma - stretch cage goldgreen.stl" implements this idea. Once put together, the two halves are locked with a ratchet snap. This way, they can still slide from 3x3x3 to 3x3x4, but not further. The cage remains locked in the 3x3x4 state, and is pushed down with a gentle push.
